Today’s Words of Wisdom artwork comes from Lauren Davies…enjoy!
Describe a bit about yourself and your work?
I am a designer and maker. After co-founding and working as part of Jiggery Pokery for seven years doing a broad range of art-direction and set design based work for clients and personal projects, I was ready for a change so have gone back to study. I started on a two year MA in Design Products at the Royal College of Art in September so I am currently taking a winding path into the unknown. I am enjoying learning, experimenting and discovering new passions whilst creating lots of new work. Despite pastures new, I remain faithful to my ongoing passions for colour, sparkle, playfulness, collecting, poundshops + junk, collage and food-related bits and pieces.
What are your words of wisdom and why?
Don’t be Shy, Give it a Try. I chose these as I believe you can only learn through trying new things out – If you don’t give things a try, you never know what you might be missing. Being brave, experimenting, saying yes and diving in at the deep end are really important for your self-development. It is also a reference to learning through making mistakes. Failure is really important to help you progress too and going off on the wrong path can often lead to happy accidents which can often be great achievements.
Who is your role-model?
I have so many role models…
Anna Lomax is a constant source of inspiration. We founded Jiggery Pokery due to our shared interests and even though we have moved on from Jiggery Pokery recently, we still ring each other up when we are stuck on an idea or need to bounce ideas. Funnily enough, our words of wisdom rhymed too without either of us knowing what the other one was doing; Me: “Don’t be Shy, Give it a Try.” Anna: “Aim High”!
Generally my role-models are in the network of inspirational creative women I surround myself with. My super-talented friends – Lucie Gledhill (jeweller), Ellie Jauncey (florist and knitwear designer), Jess Bonham (photographer) and Leah Stewart (illustrator). Chrissie MacDonald of Peepshow is a rock and the girls we used to work with when we worked with her; Kristina Grundberg, Lucy Butler, Bryony Birkbeck and Lightning & Kinglyface. Also all the people I have met along the way; You guys (Teo & Loren) and ‘The W Project’ being very high on the list! Fred Butler, Sharmadean Reid and Annie Collinge to name a few…
Last but not least – my family and boyfriend for their unwavering support and encouragement of my winding creative journey; for getting involved, for celebrating with me but also being shoulders to cry on when it all goes tits up…
Upcoming projects?
I am currently working on a VERY exciting furniture project at the moment which will be launching with an exhibition during Design Week in September. I can’t reveal any more at the moment as it is top secret but I will spill the beans nearer the time…
