Today our words of wisdom come from super talented Anna Murray and Grace Winteringham of PATTERNITY…enjoy!
Describe a bit about yourself and your work? Founded in 2010 PATTERNITY is a creative consultancy that’s driven by the certainty that pattern is everywhere; from the mundane to the magnificent. Sometimes we make things and sometimes we help others make their things better. With all the projects or products we work on we aim to go beyond the surface, using the research and application of pattern to add substance and relevance to the aesthetic. Our clients have ranged from high-end fashion houses, interior and architecture firms, media and publishing companies, to retailers, government bodies and universities. We balance all our projects with an ongoing and inclusive educational exploration of patten both online at www.patternity.co.uk and offline through talks, field trips and workshops. With this research our aim is to inspire an increased engagement with our surroundings, through pattern observation, education and interaction.
What are your words of wisdom and why? ‘LOOK BEYOND’. At Patternity our fundamental aim is to promote an awareness of seeing pattern everywhere. We encourage people to be inspired by their surroundings, noting the beauty in the seemingly banal and contrasting the mundane with the magnificent. From diesel doused pavements, where spectrums of colour swirl amongst textured road surfaces below, to the precision, stature and geometry of high rise architecture towering above. By ‘looking beyond’ and noticing the patterns that surround us we believe we can positively engage with our environment and each other
Who is your role-model? David Attenborough. The world can often seem like a very complex and daunting place. David’s approach to science and nature has always been so wise yet playful, informative yet so simple. He has promoted a heightened awareness of the environment and the world around us in a joyful and approachable way. It would be wonderful to meet him!
Upcoming projects? Alongside some very exciting design projects and collaborations (that we can’t quite talk about yet!) We’ve just been invited by Nike to run a series of creative youth workshops where we’ll be exploring pattern in the everyday. Encouraging a group of London based students to look at their urban environments with a changed perspective, then using this inspiration to create wearable patterns to use and enjoy. We’re also working towards our next large-scale exhibition which will be taking place next spring - this will be where we’ll be moving the ethos and aesthetic of Patternity online into a more interactive and tactile realm.

Launched in 2011 by Teo Connor and Loren Platt on the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day, the W Project celebrates women working across the creative industries through a lively mixture of events and activities.
